The\u00a0Africa<\/a>\u00a0Finance Corporation (AFC) and SkyPower Global have signed a joint development agreement to implement the first phase of an ultimately 1\u00a0000 MW capacity\u00a0solar<\/a>\u00a0power<\/a>\u00a0project<\/a>\u00a0in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). AFC is a multilateral pan-African development finance institution focused on catalysing private sector\u00a0infrastructure<\/a>\u00a0development across\u00a0Africa<\/a>, while SkyPower is a Canada-based\u00a0solar<\/a>\u00a0energy<\/a>\u00a0group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cPartnering with SkyPower, an institution known for their decades of global experience in large-scale\u00a0solar<\/a>\u00a0projects<\/a>, is well aligned with our mission to advance\u00a0energy<\/a>\u00a0access on the continent through\u00a0renewable energy<\/a>,\u201d affirmed AFC\u00a0project<\/a>\u00a0development and technical\u00a0solutions<\/a>\u00a0senior director\u00a0Amadou Wadda.<\/strong>\u00a0\u201cThrough this collaboration, we aim to contribute significantly to rapid industrialisation, local job creation,\u00a0sustainable<\/a>\u00a0economic growth and a pragmatic transition to net zero in DRC and\u00a0Africa<\/a>\u00a0as a whole.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SkyPower already has a 1\u00a0000 MW\u00a0solar<\/a>\u00a0power<\/a>\u00a0purchase agreement with the Soci\u00e9t\u00e9 Nationale d\u2019Electricit\u00e9 (SNEL). The SNEL is the State-owned electricity utility of the DRC. The total\u00a0solar<\/a>\u00a0power<\/a>\u00a0project<\/a>\u00a0has been denominated the Green Giant\u00a0project<\/a>\u00a0by SkyPower.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Phase 1 of the project<\/a>, covered by the joint development agreement, is for a 200 MW capacity array. All the required land has been allocated and all the necessary approvals have been obtained. Construction<\/a> should start next year. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
